In case the name of this blog doesn’t paint you a clear enough picture, I live in Milwaukee. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that our little ol’ hometown baseball team was recently crowned NL Central Division champs and are headed to the MLB postseason. Brewers mania has completely taken over this town. On my way out of downtown a couple hours ago, I counted 4 billboards about the Brewers (one of which only said BEAST MODE, but us Milwaukeeans know what that means), as well as 5 buildings that had giant Brewers logos shining on their fronts. Brewers playoff seats are the hottest tickets in town, heck, people are offering their firstborns for Uecker seats. Everyone and their mother is donning Brewers gear, people have painted their car windows blue and gold and tailgating for tomorrows game one has probably already started.
And then it hit me. HOLY CRAP IT’S HOCKEY SEASON!
Tonight the Milwaukee Admirals played their first of two exhibition games, this one being at MSOE’s Kern Center. I don’t think it really hit me that hockey season is here until I walked through the doors of the arena. For those of you that haven’t been to the Kern Center, the rink is actually located in the “basement” of the building. It’s cold and dry, and the acoustics made it seem like this game was being played in my parents garage. I perched myself high above the south end of the rink, and directly under my nose was the ice. I practically felt like I was sitting on Jeremy Smith’s lap for 40 minutes. Milwaukee won the game 5-3 (oh and double your reading pleasure by checking out my post-game report on examiner.com by clicking here) and close out their preseason with a game in Chicago tomorrow evening. Next weekend the Admirals start the regular season, and so begins the long and daunting road to the Calder Cup. It’s crazy to think just how fast this summer has flown by…
Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to address the epic fail that is my fantasy hockey team. Hull & Oates will not repeat as fantasy league champions with this garbage roster, I guarantee it. I drafted Jason Spezza, Steve Sullivan and Antoine Vermette, need I say more? Anyone want to trade for Ilya Kovalchuk? ANYONE?
Good luck to our Brewers tomorrow. I know it’s prime time for us to write about the 2011-2012 season, but I don’t even want to hear the word “hockey” between 1pm and 4pm tomorrow while the Brew Crew is playing. I won’t completely forget about you, hockey, because NHL.com reminded me today that our very own Nyjer Morgan played junior hockey in Canada (I wonder if the back of his Regina Pats jersey said PLUSH). Sidney Crosby, you’re 5,000 predictions on when you’ll return will just have to wait till the final strike is thrown. Go Brewers!
