Remember when I said that from time to time there will be cross posts between hockeygalmilwaukee.com and Milwaukee Admirals Examiner? This is one of those breaking news moments folks!
*Insert breaking news alert bumper here*
We all knew that an NHL job was going to snatch Kirk Muller away from the Admirals bench eventually, but I don’t think anyone realized it would happen quite this soon…
Just minutes ago, news broke on the world wide web that head coach Kirk Muller has resigned from the Milwaukee Admirals effective immediately, as he has accepted the head coaching position with the NHL Carolina Hurricanes. According to Admirals President Jon Greenberg (via twitter), the Admirals will be holding a press conference at 3pm CST to announce that assistant coach Ian Herbers will be taking over as bench boss for the Admirals. As of right now, I am not seeing any information on who will be taking over as assistant coach, but I’m sure that question will come up during the press conference.
A little background to as why Muller is stepping in as coach of the Hurricanes: According to NHL.com, Paul Maurice was fired this morning for the second time by the Hurricanes, as the Carolina brass had seen enough him and his 27th ranked Hurricanes. Maurice, whose team was 8-13-4 on the season leading up to his firing, also coached the ‘Canes from 1997 to partway through the 2003-2004 season (he was replaced by Peter Laviolette). He was hired back by the team after Laviolette was fired in December of 2008 and has been there ever since.
Also worth noting is that Bruce “Gabby” Boudreau was released this morning as head coach of the Washington Capitals. Boudreau, who Admirals recognize as the head coach of the Hershey Bears the year they beat the Admirals in the Calder Cup finals, spent the last four seasons with the Capitals and won the Jack Adams award during his first season behind the bench in Washington. He’s been replaced by Dale Hunter, whom of which also has a connection to the Admirals. His son, Dylan, played for Milwaukee during the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 seasons.
Follow @jonadmirals and @daveboehler for updates on the Muller departure this afternoon. I won’t be attending their press conference this afternoon, but I pretty confident that Dave will be there with bells on. Check out his Admirals blog here for his story on the situation, and check back this evening for what I assume will be a press conference write up.
I wish Muller well in his NHL position and hope for the best. From the sites I’ve read thus far today, people really are putting a lot of faith in him to turn this ship around. Nashville Predators Examiner Jim Diamond asked me this morning about Muller’s contract and wondered if Nashville will be due any compensation because he was clearly under contract, but I haven’t been able to get any answer out of anybody yet. Dave Boehler if you are reading this, ask about that at the press conference!
You may now return to your regularly scheduled desk job. Happy Monday everyone! And congratulations to Ian Herbers on the unexpected promotion!
